Why Lake Como
Lake Como is not a lake with roads around it: it is one long road that turns back on itself. The shore is steep almost everywhere, and the carriageway was cut at the water's edge or carved into the rock — short tunnels, low walls, bends that close onto a jetty or a gate. You drive slowly because you have to, and that is the point: nobody comes here for speed, they come to sit inside a landscape that changes at every turn.
The shape of the lake explains almost everything. An inverted Y: two arms running south, Como to the west and Lecco to the east, and a single branch rising north to Colico. Where the two arms meet lies the Centro Lago, the most photographed stretch and also the deepest — over four hundred metres, among the deepest lakes in Europe. The mountains fall into the water with no real plain in between, which is why the villages are small, narrow and pressed against the shore, and why the villas had to build their gardens in terraces.
The villas are the historical reason for all of it. From the eighteenth century onwards, Milanese families built their summer houses here, seeking cool air an hour from the city: Italian gardens, private boathouses, avenues of plane trees running down to the water. It is a density of architecture and gardens that no other Italian lake can match, and it drew first the Grand Tour travellers, then the cinema. The result is a place you recognise from a single photograph.
Add to that the proximity: from the centre of Milan the first stretch of lake is little more than an hour away. That is what makes a single day possible — starting in the city and ending on the water, with no overnight stay and no long transfers.
The areas
The lake changes character from one arm to the other. Knowing the difference helps in understanding what kind of day you are choosing.
Como arm
The western shore, the busiest and the richest in villas: Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Laglio, Argegno. The road runs low along the water, between historic gates and jetties. This is the stretch everyone pictures when they think of the lake.
Lecco arm
The eastern shore is steeper and more austere: the walls of the Grigne drop sheer to the water, the villages are smaller, the traffic lighter. Less postcard, more landscape, with long views towards the centre of the lake.
Centro Lago and Tremezzina
Where the two arms meet: Bellagio on its promontory, Varenna on the opposite shore, and facing them the Tremezzina with its gardens. This is where the lake opens and can be seen on three sides at once — the stretch worth lingering over.
Larian Triangle
The hinterland enclosed between the two arms: woods, rises and narrow roads that climb from the lake and drop down the other side. This is Ghisallo country, the climb made famous by cycling. If you want to really drive, you come up here.
The city of Como
Not just a starting point: a historic centre Roman in its layout and medieval in its walls, with the cathedral on the square and a living silk tradition. An hour from Milan and minutes from the first panoramic stretch.

When to come
April to June is the lake at its best: the villa gardens are in flower — the azaleas and rhododendrons are the reason many come in May — the water is still clear and the roads have yet to fill with high-season traffic.
September and October are the other good window: low light, fewer people, and the mountains beginning to turn. July and August are the busiest months on the shore; summer stays beautiful, but early morning and late afternoon are the hours to favour. In winter many villas close their gardens, but the road is clear and the lake, with low mist on the water, has a beauty of its own.
How a private day works
Experiences are private: no groups, no shared departures. The route is agreed in advance and the pace adapts to the guests — a stop can be extended, the order changed, a halt made wherever the view deserves it.
You can choose to drive — supercar or classic car — or to be accompanied by a private driver, which leaves you free to enjoy the lake without thinking about the road, which here is narrow and asks for attention.
