Why Lake Como

Lake Como is not a lake with roads around it: it is one long road that turns back on itself. The shore is steep almost everywhere, and the carriageway was cut at the water's edge or carved into the rock — short tunnels, low walls, bends that close onto a jetty or a gate. You drive slowly because you have to, and that is the point: nobody comes here for speed, they come to sit inside a landscape that changes at every turn.
The shape of the lake explains almost everything. An inverted Y: two arms running south, Como to the west and Lecco to the east, and a single branch rising north to Colico. Where the two arms meet lies the Centro Lago, the most photographed stretch and also the deepest — over four hundred meters, among the deepest lakes in Europe. The mountains fall into the water with no real plain in between, which is why the villages are small, narrow and pressed against the shore, and why the villas had to build their gardens in terraces.
The villas are the historical reason for all of it. From the eighteenth century onwards, Milanese families built their summer houses here, seeking cool air a short drive from the city: Italian gardens, private boathouses, avenues of plane trees running down to the water. Villa del Balbianello on the Lenno headland, Villa Carlotta and its botanical garden at Tremezzo, Villa d'Este at Cernobbio are the best known, but the shore is dotted with them for miles. It is a density of architecture and gardens that no other Italian lake can match, and it drew first the Grand Tour travellers, then the cinema.
Add to that the proximity: from Milan the first stretch of lake is about forty-five minutes away. That is what makes a single day possible — starting in the city and ending on the water, with no overnight stay and no long transfers.

The lake changes character from one arm to the other. Knowing the difference helps in understanding what kind of day you are choosing.
The western shore, the busiest and the richest in villas: Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Laglio, Argegno. The road runs low along the water, between historic gates and jetties. This is the stretch everyone pictures when they think of the lake.
The eastern shore is steeper and more austere: the walls of the Grigne drop sheer to the water, the villages are smaller, the traffic lighter. Less postcard, more landscape, with long views towards the center of the lake.
Where the two arms meet: Bellagio on its promontory, Varenna on the opposite shore, Menaggio on the western side, and the Tremezzina with its gardens. This is where the lake opens and can be seen on three sides at once — the stretch worth lingering over, with ferries linking the three shores in minutes.
The hinterland enclosed between the two arms: woods, rises and narrow roads that climb from the lake and drop down the other side. This is Ghisallo country, the climb made famous by cycling. If you want to really drive, you come up here.
Not just a starting point: a historic center Roman in its layout and medieval in its walls, with the cathedral on the square and a living silk tradition. An hour from Milan and minutes from the first panoramic stretch.

Which airport should I fly into for Lake Como?
Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the long-haul gateway, with nonstop flights from several US cities and about an hour by road from Como. Linate (LIN) is closer to the center of Milan but mostly European, and Bergamo (BGY) is the third option, around an hour and a quarter away.
How far in advance should I book?
The lake is busiest from late spring through early fall, and the cars and the villas for a given date are finite. As soon as your travel dates are firm, write to us: the team replies within one hour, Monday to Friday, so you will know quickly whether the day you want is open.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Italy asks drivers holding a non-EU license to carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. In the United States you get one from AAA, usually the same day, and it is valid for a year. Bring both documents on the day, together with a passport and a credit card in the driver's name.
I am staying in Milan. Do I have to reach the lake on my own?
No. The days that depart from Milan collect you in the city, at the point you choose — your hotel, an airport or an address — and bring you back to the same place. The days that start on the lake meet at Villa Flori, Via per Cernobbio, in Como.
What time is it on Lake Como, and when will I hear back?
Italy runs on Central European Time: six hours ahead of New York, nine ahead of Los Angeles. A message written in the American morning arrives inside the Italian working day, so you will normally have an answer before your afternoon.
