Lake Como day trip from Milan

One hour from the city, one side of the lake. That is the whole trick.

Lake Como is an easy day trip from Milan. A direct regional train reaches Varenna in about an hour, and Como in under an hour, so you can leave after breakfast and be by the water mid-morning. What decides whether the day works is not the journey. It is choosing one part of the lake and staying there.

The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, and its arms are long. Como sits at the bottom of the western arm; Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio face each other where the arms meet. Trying to see all of it between two trains means spending the day on boats and platforms. Below are the realistic plans, how to get there, and what a private day by car looks like if you would rather not depend on timetables.

Getting from Milan to Lake Como

There are three practical ways, and the right one depends on which part of the lake you want to see.

Train to Varenna

Regional trains on the Milan–Tirano line leave Milano Centrale roughly every hour and reach Varenna-Esino in about 64 minutes, with no change. From Varenna the ferry crosses to Bellagio and Menaggio in about fifteen minutes. This is the best base for a first visit to the centre of the lake.

Train to Como

Two lines reach the city of Como in about an hour or less: regional trains from Milano Centrale or Porta Garibaldi to Como San Giovanni, above the old town, and the Ferrovienord line from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago, a few steps from the lakefront. Como suits a slower day of old town, lakeside walk and the funicular up to Brunate.

By car

Como is about fifty kilometres from Milan, roughly an hour without traffic. The roads along the shore are narrow and slow, and parking in the lake villages is scarce on summer weekends. A car makes sense if someone else is driving, or if the drive itself is the point of the day.

Two plans that fit in one day

The centre of the lake. Train to Varenna, a walk through the village and along the lakeside path, then the ferry to Bellagio. In Bellagio the gardens of Villa Melzi run along the water south of the village, and the lanes climb steeply between shops and cafés. If there is time, a second short crossing takes you to Menaggio or to the Tremezzina shore, where Villa Carlotta and its gardens face Bellagio. Back to Varenna by ferry and home by train in the late afternoon.

The city of Como. Train to Como, the cathedral and the old town inside its medieval walls, the lakeside promenade towards Villa Olmo, and the funicular up to Brunate for the view over the first basin of the lake. From the Como waterfront, boats run north along the western shore towards Cernobbio and beyond, if you want a short trip on the water. It is a quieter day and an easier one with children or with little time.

What does not fit

Como and Bellagio in the same day by public boat: the slow boat between the two takes a large part of the morning each way, and the lake is at its best when you stop, not when you sit on deck. Villa del Balbianello, on its point at Lenno, deserves its own time, and it is closed on some weekdays, so check the FAI opening days before you plan around it. The eastern arm towards Lecco and the northern lake are different trips.

In practice: one arm or one basin, two or three stops, lunch sitting down. That is a good day on Lake Como. Five villages and three villas is a day spent queuing for boats.

A private day from Milan by car

If you would rather drive the lake than cross it, Lake Como Shores is our private day along the western shore. You are collected in Como, in Milan or at your hotel, and you drive a supercar yourself: Lezzeno, Bellagio and the gardens of Villa Melzi, and a stop at Villa d'Este in Cernobbio. The day runs about seven hours from Como, longer if you start in Milan, and the car carries only your group.

It is not a boat tour and not a stay at Villa d'Este: it is a driving day, and the car is chosen with you based on availability for your date. Tell us your dates and the proposal with the estimate arrives within about 48 hours.

When to go

From spring to early autumn the boats run more often and the gardens are open; May, June and September are the most comfortable months. July and August weekends are the busiest, on the trains as well as on the ferries, so go on a weekday if you can. In winter the timetables shrink and some villas close, but the lake is quiet and the light is clear. Whatever the season, check the Trenord and Navigazione Laghi timetables for your date before you leave.

Questions about a Lake Como day trip from Milan

Is Lake Como a good day trip from Milan?

Yes. A direct train reaches Varenna in about an hour and Como in under an hour, so a day trip works well as long as you choose one part of the lake rather than trying to see all of it.

How long is the train from Milan to Lake Como?

About 64 minutes from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino on a direct regional train, and around an hour or less to Como, either from Milano Centrale or Porta Garibaldi to Como San Giovanni or from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago.

Should I go to Varenna or Como for a day trip?

Varenna for the centre of the lake: from there the ferry reaches Bellagio and Menaggio in about fifteen minutes. Como for a city day with the old town, the lakefront and the funicular to Brunate.

Can I see Bellagio, Varenna and Como in one day?

Bellagio and Varenna, yes: they face each other and the ferry takes about fifteen minutes. Adding Como means hours on the slow boat or on the road, and it is better left for another day.

Do I need a car for a Lake Como day trip?

No. Train and ferry cover the classic day well. A car is worth it only if someone else drives or if driving the shore is the point of the day, because roads are narrow and parking is scarce in summer.

Is there a private Lake Como tour from Milan?

Yes. Lake Como Shores is a private day by supercar along the western shore, with pickup in Como, Milan or at your hotel. You drive; it is not a boat tour. It runs about seven hours from Como, longer from Milan.
