Overview

How a Chianti wine tour works

A Chianti wine tour with Rocca d'Italia is a private day in Chianti Classico, the hills between Florence and Siena. We collect you in Florence, in Siena or at your hotel, take you to the estate for the tasting, and you have lunch in Chianti before the drive back. The day runs about seven hours and the car carries only your group.

There are four ways to spend the day. Two are wine days with a chauffeur: one estate, Castello di Brolio, or two, Brolio and Castello di Radda. Two are driving days, where you take the wheel of a supercar or a classic car and the tasting at Brolio is a stop along the road. Tell us your dates and your group, and the proposal with the estimate arrives within about 48 hours.

The morning starts at your door. From Florence the drive south into Chianti takes a little over an hour; from Siena, Castello di Brolio is about half an hour away. The tasting is the centre of the day: the cellar, the vineyards around the castle, and the wines poured in order, from the youngest Chianti Classico upwards. Lunch follows in Chianti, without hurry.

If wine is the reason for the day, choose a chauffeur: the person who tastes is not the person who drives back. If the road is the reason, drive it yourself. Heart of Chianti is a day in a supercar, and the fleet includes Ferrari and Porsche models, chosen with you based on availability for your date. Dolce Vita in Chianti is the same hills at the pace of a classic car.

Nobody joins your car on the way, and nothing is shared with another group. That is the difference between a private Chianti winery tour and a seat on a coach: the schedule bends to you.

The places of the day

Chianti Classico is a band of wooded hills between Florence and Siena. These are the places our days pass through.

Near Gaiole in Chianti, the Ricasoli family's castle and estate, and the stop on every one of our Chianti days. From the walls the view takes in the vineyards all the way to Siena. Our day includes the tasting, not a castle admission ticket.

Questions about Chianti wine tours

How far is Chianti from Florence?

The first Chianti Classico vineyards start about 30 minutes south of Florence. Castello di Brolio, where our days stop, is a little over an hour from Florence by car and about half an hour from Siena.

Is this a group tour?

No. Every Chianti wine tour we run is private: the car, the chauffeur and the tasting are for your group only, from two guests to larger families and companies.

Can I visit Chianti wineries without a car?

Only with a driver. Public buses reach the main towns but not the estates, and in Italy the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l. A private chauffeur is the simple answer: you taste, someone else drives.

What is the difference between Chianti and Chianti Classico?

Chianti Classico is the historic zone between Florence and Siena, with its own DOCG and the black rooster seal on the bottle. Chianti DOCG covers a much larger area around it. All our days are in Chianti Classico.

Can I drive a Ferrari in Chianti?

Yes, on the Heart of Chianti day. The fleet includes Ferrari and Porsche models, and the car is confirmed for your date when we send the proposal. Drivers from outside the EU need an International Driving Permit with their license.

When is the best time for a Chianti wine tour?

Spring and early autumn. In late September and the first half of October the harvest is under way. Weekdays are calmer at the wineries than weekends, and estates and cars for a given day are limited, so write to us as soon as your dates are firm.

How much does a private Chianti wine tour cost?

It depends on the date, the day you choose and the number of guests, so we do not publish a fixed price. Send a request and the proposal with the estimate arrives within about 48 hours.
